As a visiting student at the University of Glasgow, I met Mrs. Wang. She
was an immigrant from China who, though she had lived in Glasgow for two years, she knew less of
the city than I. Like many others, her limited English proficiency limited her to interacting
with other Chinese people; in essence Mrs. Wang was confined to the local community. This
language barrier not only forced her into seclusion and, in a sense, alienation from the
community. Mrs. Wang asked me earnestly to teach her English; she believed this was the key to
helping her become involved with her local community. I took the challenge but ultimately was
limited by my own inability to design appropriate curriculum for her—I knew what to teach but
not how to teach. I resolved at that time to further my education so that I could become an
excellent language teacher.

Indeed this boost in academic confidence spilled over into my
participation in other academic and research activities. For example, when I became aware of an
opportunity to participate in the “National Mathematical Contest in Modeling”, a nationwide
problem-solving competition, I was immediately determined to participate and be one of the
finalists. Knowing that success only comes with hard work, I began an 8-hour training program
every Sunday for an entire year with my competition teammates. We started the training by
learning basic methods in modeling, dimensional analysis, optimization methods, data processing
and numerical analysis.

As I walked down the road on my way back home from the library, listening
to Bob Dylan sing “how many roads must a man walk down before you call him man” through my
headphones, an unknown number called my phone. “Hello. Is ZhaoYuan Su available?” A deep male
voice came from the other end. “Yes. Who’s this?” I answered. “Hi, ZhaoYuan. It’s DongWei, the
beneficiary of your campaign. I just want to say thank you for your support and I would love to
visit you if you have time during the week.” It was at that moment I felt like months of hard
work were truly worthwhile

The breadth of knowledge is no less important than the depth of
scientific research, and then Massive Opening Online Courses (MOOCs) came in. This year, I took
part in the Machine Learning courses at coursera.com and I benefit from it in at least two
aspects. On the one hand, I comprehended how to apply many of the most advanced machine learning
algorithms to solve real-life problems, such as using Neural Network to recognize hand-written
digits, using SVMs to build anti-spam algorithm, implementing the anomaly detection algorithm to
detect failing servers on a network. On the other hand, I also grasped how to select the right
algorithm for the right job, as well as debug and figure out how to improve a learning
algorithm's by analyzing training, test, and cross-validation set error and learning curve. In
the end, I received to an online course statement of 100% accomplishment.

Music arouses emotional responses, and performing positively affects my
life and helped me to build pride and confidence. This was especially true when I was awarded
first prize at the Guangzhou College Students’ Arts Performance and the Golden Bell Awards for
Music. I was first able to appreciate the change that music can bring into people’s lives as I
participated in the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Before the games, the
Director of the Chinese Olympics had told us that we were to “Bring a surprise to the world and
a feeling of pride to the Chinese.” After fierce rehearsals starting at 6:30 and rehearsing for
over 14 hours per day under the burning sun, we introduced the world to 5,000 years of Chinese
culture and history during the opening ceremony.

I am so than thankful for my American High School to open its arms to me,
and I sincerely wish all American K12 education could do so as well. As Tina Bianchi wrote in
her research paper “Multiculturalism in the Schools”, cultural exchange benefits students from
both countries the “sending” and “receiving” countries. While exchange students gain more
insight into American culture and society, American students can also form a holistic picture of
the world on the other side of the globe without traveling physically.

A master's degree in the performing arts management would give me the
chance to fill in gaps of knowledge that are necessary to excel in this industry. Pursuing this
degree in the United States in particular would give me the opportunity to introduce traditional
Chinese music into the US market and provide a better platform for musical exchanges between the
US and China. Prior to applying to New York University, I undertook a comprehensive
investigation of Chinese orchestra performances in the U.S. Most of such performances have low
attendance rates, and suffer from profit losses. The reasons for this is NOT due to bad music,
but rather due to the lack of knowledge in operating and planning performances that cater to an
American audience.

Fortunately, in time, two things changed my life. In 2004 and 2005, a
Chinese Warcraft III player Sky, whose actual name is Li Xiaofeng, won two consecutive World
Cyber Games (WCG) championship titles. Before that, he was just one of thousands of professional
E-sport players; a teenager seemingly abandoned by our society who was only several years older
than me. Through his own efforts he changed his life by the computer, and I started to think
carefully about how my life should be lived and whether computer science was something I could
pursue in directing my own life. I realized it was my dream to help children like me who grow up
trying to balance their childhood and influence from the information age.
